Introducing Color Palette

The color palette feature simplifies choosing harmonious colors for users unfamiliar with color theory and trends. Following its release, we observed a 28.7% reduction in the time required to save designs for those utilizing the color palette.

However, despite becoming one of the editor's most frequently used features, its direct impact on the subscription rate was minimal.

Hypothesis

Enabling automatic color application simplifies the coloring process compared to adjusting each color manually, reducing the time needed to save designs and boosting export rates. Delivering immediate, visually appealing results also strengthens user confidence and increases the perceived value of the platform, potentially driving higher subscription and renewal rates.

Creating Harmonious Color Combinations

This sprint's most challenging task involved developing a set of rules for color palettes to ensure that colors are easily recognizable and harmonious, regardless of the design's complexity.

I designed palettes based on current trends, limiting each to 4~6 colors for consistency and visual appeal. To maintain strong contrast when shuffling background and foreground elements, I established a formula to generate additional colors that aligned with the existing palette.

Determining the Location of the Feature

Determining the optimal location for this feature was a challenge since it simultaneously changed the color of multiple elements. Features accessed through the editor's bottom toolbar typically affected individual elements such as texts, images, symbols, and backgrounds.

Since redesigning the bottom or top bars was out of scope for the sprint and could impact success metrics, I placed the color palette in the top menu bar, accompanied by a tooltip to aid user discovery.

Easy and Simple Interaction

For the first time, I introduced "Cancel" and "Apply" buttons to a feature, allowing users to easily revert to the original color state and prevent cluttering the action history with repeated palette taps. To address limited UI space, I organized sections within a horizontal scroll container to keep the interaction simple and clean.

We also added an "Auto-Pick" button to randomly select color palettes and measure user preference for automatic versus manual selection.

After the release, the palette shuffle event has become one of the top 10 triggered events within the editor. However, we observed an inverse relationship between the frequency of shuffling and save conversions, suggesting that helping users find colors faster could lead to more saved designs.

Comparing 14-day averages before and after launch, we saw no major change in subscription conversion rates. While there was a slight uptick in renewal rates, it’s difficult to attribute this directly to the color palette feature.

Analysis also showed that certain palette categories led to higher save conversion rates, suggesting that reorganizing category order could further improve save conversion rates.
