A Quicker Way to Discover Fonts

To improve font customization engagement, I made the font picker easier to access and introduced a recommended fonts section. Working within the fixed-height toolbar was a challenge.

After testing several layout options, I grouped font styles (like thin, bold, and italic) under each typeface to shorten the font list and make browsing faster. This kept the experience simple and avoided adding extra navigation steps.

Increasing the awareness of Pro Fonts

Previously, when users scrolled through the font picker, the fonts were instantly applied to the selected text, helping users quickly find styles they liked. However, free users couldn’t preview how their text would look with pro fonts, limiting their awareness of the upgrade value.

To address this, I developed several prototypes and conducted internal testing to create an intuitive way for free users to preview pro fonts. I also ensured that the upgrade requirement was clearly communicated at key interaction points, encouraging users to recognize the value of pro membership.

Text Editor Color Chips

Color features have some of the highest engagement rates in the text editor. To make color selection more direct and intuitive, we introduced a minimal set of color chips. Choosing the right number and range of colors was critical: colors needed to be evenly distributed across the spectrum and easily distinguishable, including for users with color vision deficiencies.

Since the applied color appears directly in the text editor, maintaining text readability was a key priority. To ensure high contrast, I created a guideline for automatically adjusting the editor’s background color when the contrast between text and background fell below a set threshold.

Results and Lessons Learned

Text color and font engagement increased by 33.1% and 180%, respectively.
The 180% lift in font selection and a 13.3 times increase in subscription rates via pro fonts demonstrate that allowing users to preview all fonts, combined with clear upgrade messaging, successfully communicated the value of the pro offering.

We also saw a 38.2% boost in new user subscriptions (excluding the onboarding funnel), suggesting the updated text editor had a positive impact on user conversion, especially since all new users interact with the editor during the tutorial immediately after onboarding.

On the other hand, the increase for the users who tap the "save icon" in the editor was minimal by 3.3%. This outcome suggests we need to explore ways to enhance the results so users are more inclined to export their designs after editing.

Additionally, the text editor "Done" button tap rate declined by 19.1%. One hypothesis is that the richer editing features may have increased the likelihood of users canceling changes to return to the original state. Further investigation is needed to understand whether this behavior signals friction or simply a new editing pattern.
